This game predates Men Of War (MoW), but will definitely appeal to anyone who is fond of those games. It is similar to MoW in that it is an in-depth combat simulation involving anything from infantry to vehicles to planes, each with their own inventories, names, and experience. It diverges from MoW in that the engagement distances and overall scale of things is far closer to reality. Tanks can actually thow mass several km downrange and still have lethal momentum. Even rifles can shoot several hundred meters. It is slower paced than MoW, but is larger scale and is much more persistent in the single player, with infantry and crew members each gaining experience that you get to allocate into their different aspects and medals that you get to award them. Everything carries over from one campaign battle to the next, and what you've got is what you've got: losing armor or entire squads really hurts. All in all, it is a clunky but very respectable (even lovable) game and certainly has it's sights on what's important. I hope they make a Theatre of War 4 with engine and interface improvements, more factions, and the ability to play a drop-in multiplayer campaign. That will be an instant buy.. It's very annoying every time a single soldier of your side got killed, the game automatically pauses and reports the K.I.A. status. Imagine in one battle how many times the game pauses itself and you have to unpause it, like 20+ times, which is insane. And i have checked the option menu, there is no where to disable it. It's playable but very annoying game.. Very good idea, bur AI and controls, to me, are poor. i love this game :D the tactical gameplay is so good, especially the realism for tanks and the german 88's,2km range :D.anyways this game is really good and anyone who would get this would love this if ou love RTS as much as i do. I wish I could give this a mixed review. I like the game, but it has issues that prevent it from being easily recommendable. The biggest issue is the A.I pathfinding is horrible at times, and you kind of need to micromanage a bit too much with tanks. I mean that when you command a single soldier or tank it doesn't seem like there is any way to make it rotate at a move point, however when commanding groups you can for some reason. When commanding individual units you need to use the "Defend" command AFTER it gets to it's destination to get it to face the right direction. And the games tutorials are practically pointless, they don't explain really anything. I was getting♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥off for the first half hour because I kept losing my tank in the tutorial mission because the game didn't tell me how to make them go in reverse. They also don't tell you how to make soldiers pick up weapons, change ammo types, or even how to manually use a grenade. You use the "retreat" command to make them go backwards (i assumed it made them flee). If you do get the game be sure to play around with the U.I a bit. If you can deal with the at times abysmal pathfinding (Hold shift and use waypoints) then the game is amazing if you want a realistic RTS game, although I probably would still prefer Combat Mission. And it's worth mentioning I did have a random crash, so I would save often. But if you can put up with it's annoying playability issues, you will get a lot of value out of it.But if you don't know what kind of game it is, it isnt a RTS like C&C or Starcraft. There isn't any of the rock-paper-scissors countering ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t. One of the reasons I gravitated towards these kinds of games is because I was tired of games where a sniper can take 100 bullets because the attacking unit didn't say "good against snipers" in it's description. I would still say that Men of War is realistic enough for most people, but if want something that's more realistic than even those, this would be a good starting point, mostly because of it's low price tag.. I have the original Theatre of War ( but not on Steam) plus this one (with Steam) and they are surprisingly very addictive - More about 'tactics' than strategy though.. Very disappointing game, with a horrible camera and rather stupid AI and almost no environment to work with. You also get thrown in different scenarios and can't work with the most of your units (you should at least be able to build some defences). The idea behind the game is great tho, but the implemantatio is rather poor.. Very nice.... This game is STILL incredibly good for it's time. I recently purchased the battlefront Combat missions black sea and red thunder, and to MY taste, I still like the theater of war games a little bit more. And yes, you can't beat the price on theater of war series, compared to the almost $100 I just paid for black sea and red thunder.
